What Yin Yoga actually is

Yin holds seated and reclined postures for three to five minutes with the muscles relaxed, working into connective tissue rather than muscle. It is slow, quiet and often the hardest class on a schedule for anyone used to moving. Frequently paired with a restorative or Nidra section at the end.

  • Holds of three to five minutes
  • Heavy prop use
  • Connective tissue rather than muscular focus
  • Common as an evening or recovery class

What Yin Yoga costs

$16-$30 per class is the national range. Below is what studios on this site actually charge, and when we last checked.

Full price guide

Not enough studios have published a yin yoga price for us to show a city range yet. A single studio's price is not a range, so we are not going to print one. $16-$30 per class is the national guide.

Is Yin Yoga right for you?

The honest version. Every class style suits some people and not others, and a directory that pretends otherwise wastes your first class fee.

It suits you if

  • Anyone with a fast, strong training week that needs a counterweight
  • People working on hip and lower back mobility
  • Anyone who finds a still practice easier than a moving one

Look elsewhere if

  • People who want a workout. Yin is not one
  • Anyone with hypermobility, without a teacher who understands it

Before you book

What happens in your first class

  1. 1Postures are held for three to five minutes, which feels long at first
  2. 2You are meant to find an edge and stop well short of pain
  3. 3Bring warm layers. You cool down quickly when you stop moving

What to ask before you pay

  • Ask how long the holds are. Two minutes is not really Yin
  • Check that bolsters and blocks are provided in quantity
  • Ask whether the teacher has trained specifically in Yin, not just in flow

How Yin Yoga compares

Ranges are national guides for each style, not one studio's price.

Yin Yoga questions

What actually happens in a Yin class?

Fifteen to twenty shapes over an hour or so, mostly seated or lying, each held for three to five minutes with bolsters and blocks underneath you. The instructor talks far less than in a flow class.

Is Yin a workout?

Not in the way that word usually means. Nothing raises your heart rate and you will not be sore in the same way. The difficulty is entirely in staying still once a hold gets uncomfortable at the two minute mark.

Is Yin the same as restorative Yoga?

No, and this is the most useful distinction on a Yoga timetable. Yin takes you to the edge of a stretch and asks you to stay there. Restorative props you up so completely that there is no stretch at all.

Why compare Yin Yoga here

  • Prices carry a date

Every price on this page shows when a person last checked it. Stale is stated, never hidden.

  • Verification is four states

Listed, claimed, verified and enhanced. We never blur them into one green tick.

  • Equipment aware

Class size is capped by machine count, which is why the apparatus in the room is listed, not just the class name.

  • Position is never sold

Order is verification, freshness and rating. No studio can buy its way up this list.
