What Mat Pilates actually is

Mat Pilates works through the original floor sequence using your own body weight, sometimes with a ring, a small ball or light weights. Class sizes are larger than Reformer because the room is not limited by machines, which is also why it is usually the cheapest class on the schedule.

  • No machine required
  • Larger class sizes and lower prices
  • Often included in unlimited memberships
  • Strong focus on core control and breath
  • Easy to continue at home

What Mat Pilates costs

$18-$32 per class is the national range. Below is what studios on this site actually charge, and when we last checked.

Not enough studios have published a mat pilates price for us to show a city range yet. A single studio's price is not a range, so we are not going to print one. $18-$32 per class is the national guide.

Is Mat Pilates right for you?

The honest version. Every class style suits some people and not others, and a directory that pretends otherwise wastes your first class fee.

It suits you if

  • People who want the lowest cost way into Pilates
  • Anyone who wants a practice they can continue at home
  • Those happy in a larger class without individual correction

Look elsewhere if

  • Anyone who wants spring resistance or machine support
  • People with an injury who need the load taken off, which the Reformer does better

Before you book

What happens in your first class

  1. 1Bring nothing. Mats, rings and small props are almost always provided
  2. 2Wear fitted clothing so the instructor can see your alignment
  3. 3Expect small movements repeated precisely rather than big dynamic ones

What to ask before you pay

  • Ask the class cap. Mat rooms are not limited by machines, so sizes vary widely
  • Check whether mat classes are included in the membership or charged separately
  • Ask whether props are provided or whether you are expected to buy your own

How Mat Pilates compares

Ranges are national guides for each style, not one studio's price.

Mat Pilates questions

How much does a mat Pilates class cost?

Mat Pilates typically costs $18 to $32 per class, noticeably less than Reformer. Many studios include unlimited mat classes in a membership while charging extra for Reformer.

Should I start with mat or Reformer Pilates?

Start with whichever your nearest studio teaches well. Mat is cheaper and needs no equipment, so it is the lower risk first class. Reformer gives more support and feedback, which some beginners find easier. Trying one of each during an intro offer is the honest answer.

Do I need to bring anything to a mat class?

No. Mats, rings, small balls and light weights are provided almost everywhere, and studios would rather you used theirs than brought a soft travel mat. Fitted clothing is the only thing worth planning, so the instructor can see what your spine is doing.

Why compare Mat Pilates here

  • Prices carry a date

Every price on this page shows when a person last checked it. Stale is stated, never hidden.

  • Verification is four states

Listed, claimed, verified and enhanced. We never blur them into one green tick.

  • Equipment aware

Class size is capped by machine count, which is why the apparatus in the room is listed, not just the class name.

  • Position is never sold

Order is verification, freshness and rating. No studio can buy its way up this list.
