About Rolates Pilates
Rolates teaches classical Pilates at 939 8th Avenue between 55th and 56th, and the studio says the renovated room it works in was once Joe and Clara Pilates' own New York space. Group classes are capped at three, which puts them closer to a semi private than to a class, and the apparatus runs reformer, tower and mat.
Roberta Kirschenbaum directs the studio, which also runs the Bridge and mentoring programmes for teachers and sits with the Pilates Method Alliance. MAMA's Pilates is the perinatal class, circuit style over 50 minutes, and it needs a doctor's note before you can take it. Grippy socks are required in every class.
The rate card is unusually detailed for a Manhattan studio. A single group class is $45, five are $215 and ten are $400. A private is $120, five are $575 and ten are $1,100. Duets run $70 a session and trios $60. Union professionals pay $90, and professional dancers and students $70. Tax of 4.5% sits on top of all of it.
New clients get three private sessions for $210, which includes a posture evaluation and works out at $70 each. Sessions run 45 minutes, and the studio asks you to arrive 15 minutes early on the first one for paperwork. Cancellations need 24 hours.

View all FAQsIs Rolates Pilates the same place as Hell's Kitchen Pilates?
Yes, the studio goes by both names. You want 939 8th Ave #207, New York, NY 10019, a couple of blocks from Columbus Circle, and the phone is (917) 853-5940.
Is this really the original Pilates space?
Rolates describes itself as sitting in Joe and Clara Pilates's original space, teaching classic Pilates by Columbus Circle. Treat that as the studio's own account of the address at 939 8th Ave rather than something independently checked.
Which package is worth buying at Rolates?
Drop in is $45, a 5 group class package is $215 for 5 classes, and a 10 group class package is $400 for 10 classes. The 5 pack barely beats paying at the door, so it only makes sense if you are testing the place, and the 10 pack is the one that actually moves the per class number. Private sessions are $120.
What does the intro offer get you at Rolates?
Three private sessions for $210. Since one private on its own is $120, that offer is the cheapest way to learn the apparatus properly, and the studio suggests beginners start with a private anyway.
Why can I not book a Rolates class on the day?
You cannot. Classes close 12 hours before start time at Rolates, so book the night before.
What is Joe's Gym?
A self-guided studio membership. You move independently through the full range of equipment instead of following a class, and a complimentary in-studio orientation comes first so you know the space and the machines.
What is MAMA's Pilates?
A 50-minute circuit-style class using weights, cardio and stretching, built for the perinatal body. A doctor's note is required to take part, so sort that out before you book a spot.
Which apparatus will I get on at Rolates?
Small group apparatus classes run on the Reformer, Tower and Chair, with Mat classes and MELT Restore alongside them. A Cadillac, Wunda Chair and Barrel are on the floor too, and grippy socks are required for every class, sold at the studio if you forget yours.
