Contemporary studios keep the Pilates principles but vary the order, mix in props and draw on current rehabilitation and strength research. Most modern group Reformer studios in the United States are contemporary rather than classical, even when they do not use the word.

Contemporary Pilates questions
What is the difference between contemporary and classical Pilates?
Order and repertoire. Contemporary varies the class order, borrows from rehabilitation and strength science, and includes exercises Joseph Pilates never taught. Classical keeps the original sequence intact.
Is one of them better?
They answer different questions. Take classical if you want a fixed benchmark and the full apparatus. Take contemporary if you want an instructor who will restructure the hour around a cranky shoulder.
Is contemporary Pilates taught on the mat or the Reformer?
Both, often inside the same class, which is why the price sits in the Reformer band at $28 to $50 rather than the mat one. The machine is normally in the room even when half the hour is spent off it.
